Hi, we’re childhood buddies, Ben and Robert and X.O Grill is our lockdown baby. What started out as an experimental pop-up in Gumpendorfer Straße, is now our labour of love, tears and culinary joy.
We set out with a simple goal: to create street food that sets a new standard in Austria.
Our Smash + sandwiches are made with our beloved XO Beef from Xtra Old Austrian dairy cows – particularly delicious, thanks to the extra time the cows have had to mature whilst roaming the fields. It’s then dry-aged for up to 7 weeks, for good measure!
Not only damn tasty, we also believe it’s a more responsible way of eating beef. Our retired dairy cows have often lived for around 10-15 years and produced greenhouse gases whilst generating milk, so their meat comes effectively as a bonus, with minimal additional CO2 emissions (beyond transport). Now we’re not saying it’s perfect – meat will never be a sustainable product, but we reckon that if we’re going to eat it, let’s do it better.
And we’re trying to do it right in other areas too – we aim to use only the best seasonal ingredients from local producers and are working hard to keep waste low and sustainability high on our agenda.
